--EXTERNAL LINK to YouTube-- Click image for a Super 8 movie of Big Valley from 1972. The cameraman is between the base lodge and the chairlift house. The lodge is at left. The T-bar is at far left. The skiers in the foreground are in line for the chairlift. The casualty is being taken around the lodge to the lower-level ski patrol room. Filmed by John Zweizig.

A pre-season picture from 1970. The T-bar house appears to be under construction. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

Another 1970 picture featuring joy rides on the chairlift. The maintenance building is behind and to the left of the chairlift house. I have no recollection of the other buildings surrounding the maintenance building and they do not appear in later photographs. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

A 1974 shot near the base of the T-bar. This was probably taken early in the season as snow has yet to be made on the far slope. Note the toy snow bike in the foreground. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

img

Looking up Grizzly. Note the island of trees in the middle of the trail. After the ski area became Hahn Mt., most of the trails, including Grizzly, were cleared and widened. 1973. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

A 1973 view of snowmaking at the base of Hawk's Landing. Note all the snowmaking activity between the light poles and the chairlift. This portion of the slope was not used during the Hahn Mountain Era. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

Five industrial compressors are lined up in front of the maintenance building in support of snowmaking operations. The ski area rented these units seasonally. 1973. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

Big Valley's Thiokol snowcat towing the grooming implement. Hahn Mt. eventually acquired two newer snowcats. This one was retained as backup. 1973. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

Warning signs on the chairlift house. Unfortunately the picture isn't good enough to read the Hall Ski-Lift plaque. Note that cage-looking thing behind the chairlift house. That was the maintenance chair; basically a platform that could be hooked on to the cable and run up the line to inspect or the repair the tower machinery. It was always around, but I don't recall ever seeing it in use. Also, all the chairs would often be removed from the cable and stored on the ground off-season. 1973. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

A look inside the chairlift house. 1973. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

Looking from the front of the lodge toward the chairlift loading area. Note the Thiokol snowcat in the background. Note the absence of Rooster Run and the rope tow. 1973. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

Looking from the inside the cocktail lounge toward the chairlift loading area with some sort of goggle-shaped decoration on the window. Note that this same window and window decoration are visible in the video at the top of the page. 1973. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

img

A beginner ski class in front of the lodge. Ski instructors are in red. Note the yellow chairs. Everything would be painted red during the Hahn Mountain era. This picture predates the rope-tow and Rooster Run. Beginner classes were conducted in front of the lodge. New students had to side-step their way up the slope until they gained enough experience to try the T-bar. 1975. Photo by Gary Zweizig.

Hahn Mountain Ski School from 1983. This picture was taken in front of the lodge. The chairlift house is visible at right. The Pinnacle looms in the background. Ski instructors Gary and Patricia Zweizig have just hopped on the chairlift. The "Rooster Run" beginner's slope is in the background. Note the rope-tow on the far side of the slope. 1983. Photo by Barry Johnston.

img

Top of the T-bar from 1983. I have no idea why the gorilla is wearing an apron. Note the path around the back of the T-bar's bullwheel which leads to the Sitzmark slope. As I recall, this path was a Hahn Mt. addition. Sitzmark was previously inaccessible from the T-bar. Photo by Barry Johnston.

Here's one of the new snow guns operated as part of a new snowmaking system installed for what would be the last winter of Hahn's existence. The new system covered Big Valley, Appalachian and Grizzly. The remaining slopes were covered by the old Hedco machines. I remember being excited about the new system because it demonstrated a rare sign of progress for Hahn. But it turned into something of a disaster when the new water pipes were allowed to freeze. I remember long runs of hose through the woods as frozen pipes were bypassed. I remember the appearance of big ice rods as pipe sections were unbolted and thawed. And I remember the giant ice fountains from leaking pipe joints after the system was reassembled. Image courtesy of Lloyd Lutz.

The Pinnacle, a popular overlook along the Appalachian Trail, was visible from the ski area. Here's a view of Hahn Mt. from the Pinnacle. Rows of green pine trees define the lower slopes. The short perpendicular row of trees divides the slopes from the parking lot. Photo by Lynn Lictus.

img

Here's the old Hahn Mt. lodge from around 2012. All the decking is gone and the building looks to be in poor repair. I don't recall any of those sliding glass doors along the front of the building. I believe that's a post Hahn modification. Image courtesy of Lisa Foster.

img

Another shot from 2012. The entrance on the parking lot side of the lodge doesn't look very inviting. Image courtesy of Lisa Foster.

img

More from 2012. The picture looks up Sitzmark from about where the T-bar base would have been located. The T-bar line ran up the left side of the pine trees at right. All the lower slopes were lined with pine trees during the Hahn Mt. era. Look how big they are 30 years later. All the lower slopes appear to be maintained as hay fields. Image courtesy of Lisa Foster.

img

Looking from the lodge up Hawk's Landing. I have a hard time reconciling the scale of this picture. I remember Hawk's Landing being a huge wide-open slope. Now the trees are so big that the slope looks small. 2012. Image courtesy of Lisa Foster.

Looking from in front of the lodge up Grizzly. Grizzly has nearly grown in. 2012. Image courtesy of Lisa Foster.

This picture and those below were taken in 2015, about 30 years after the ski area closed. The photo above looks toward the chairlift side of the lodge with the ski slopes on the left. The bar is at the far end of the room. The kitchen is behind the white walls on the right. The burgundy curtains surround some sort of stage that is obviously a post Hahn modification. The photo shows how the lodge interior was modified after Hahn took over from Big Valley. As I recall the lodge had a simple suspended ceiling during the Big Valley era. Hahn removed the ceiling, cut the middle out of all the roof trusses and added a large array of windows to each gable. Image courtesy of Don Hartman.

img

The stage. This is obviously a post Hahn addition and is built in front of where the cafeteria counter was located. I believe those red, orange and yellow lamps are Hahn artifacts. Image courtesy of Don Hartman.

img

Looking toward the parking lot side of the lodge. The doors at the end of the room lead to the deck and to the stairwell down to the lower level of the building. Image courtesy of Don Hartman.

img

The lower level of the lodge looking toward the ticket counter on the left. Ski rentals were in the room behind the ticket counter. The dark hall on the right leads to the stairwell to the upper level. Doors on the left side of the hall lead to the ski rental area. Doors on the right side of the hall lead to the restrooms. To the right of the photographer were a gameroom and another alcove with upholstered chairs and sofas. Behind the photographer were the ski patrol room and another area that was once a small ski shop. Image courtesy of Don Hartman.
